Lessons
Do I need my own equipment for a lesson?
No. We can provide everything you need for your lesson including rods, reels, lines, waders and boots. Just let us know when you book.
Where are you based?
We are based at Swinton Estate, just outside a small town called Masham in the north of England. We instruct and guide on local rivers and still waters across the north of England and we also host national and international trips.
Do you offer corporate events?
Yes, we can arrange group fishing experiences and corporate away days on request. We can also collaborate with Swinton Hotel for food, accommodation and activities including clay shooting, spa, yoga and more - please get in touch to discuss what you're looking for.
Can I buy a voucher for a friend or family member?
Yes, gift vouchers are available for all our lessons and guided days and make a great present for any angler. You can find them in our online shop.
I've never fished before - can you still help me?
Absolutely. A lot of our clients come to us as complete beginners and that's exactly who we love working with. We'll start from scratch and all being well, have you casting and catching fish sooner than you'd expect.
What types of lessons do you offer?
We offer beginner lessons, improver sessions, one-to-one casting tuition, guided river days, kids and family days and more! Please take a look at our Fishing School and Hosted Trips tab for all our services.
How long does a lesson last?
Lessons typically run for half a day (3–4 hours) or a full day (6–8 hours) depending on what you've booked. We can also arrange bespoke sessions to suit your schedule. Take a look at our Fishing School tab and we hope to hear from you soon!
How many people can come on a lesson or guided day?
We cater for 1 to as many people as you wish, although we try to keep the ratio of 2 people per instructor so you get proper, focused attention throughout the day. If we are dealing with larger groups then we may stretch to 3 people per instructor.
I can already cast - can you still help me improve?
Yes. We offer improver and technique-specific sessions for anglers who already have the basics and want to refine their casting, learn new methods or start catching more fish.
Do you offer Spey and two-handed casting lessons?
Yes - Spey casting instruction is one of our specialities. Whether you're picking up a double-handed rod for the first time or looking to refine your technique, we can help. This will be located on the River Ure where it is possible to catch an English Atlantic salmon!
How do I book a lesson or guided day?
You can book through our website or by emailing us directly at info@northernfishingco.com.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
Yes, we ask for a deposit at the time of booking to secure your date. The balance is due one month before the session.
What is your cancellation policy?
We require at least 48 hours' notice to reschedule a session. While we don't offer refunds, we're happy to arrange a reschedule instead. Cancellations made within 48 hours of the session will result in loss of full payment. We'll always do our best to rearrange where possible.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We fish in most weather conditions - in fact some of the best fishing happens in overcast or light rain. If conditions are genuinely unsafe we'll contact you to rearrange. If your session is on the river and it is in flood we will contact you to rearrange your day.
Is fly fishing safe for children?
Yes, with proper supervision and appropriate kit fly fishing is a great activity for children. Our instructors who do kids days are all DBS checked. We're happy to discuss - just get in touch.
Insurance & Safety
Are you insured?
Yes. We hold full public liability insurance covering all our lessons, guided sessions and activities.
Do I need a fishing licence?
Yes. In England and Wales anyone over 13 fishing for salmon, trout or coarse fish needs a valid rod licence from the Environment Agency. You can buy one online at gov.uk. We can point you in the right direction when you book.
The Shop
Where do you source your products?
We stock gear from brands we use and believe in - including Patagonia, LOOP, RIO, Fulling Mill, Vision, Costa Del Mar, Shilton and others. If we wouldn't fish with it ourselves, we won't sell it. We also don't have loads of different brands and products, just the ones we use ourselves.
Do you offer any advice on what gear to buy?
Yes - that's what we're here for. If you're not sure what you need, drop us an email or give us a call and we'll point you in the right direction without trying to oversell you something you don't need. No question is a stupid question!
General Fly Fishing
What is fly fishing?
Fly fishing is a method of fishing that uses a weighted line to cast a lightweight artificial fly to the fish. Unlike other forms of fishing the weight is in the line rather than the lure, which is what makes the casting technique unique.
What species can I catch fly fishing in the north of England?
The main species are brown trout, rainbow trout, grayling, sea trout and Atlantic salmon. Predator fly fishing for pike is also growing in popularity.
What time of year is best to go fly fishing?
It depends on the species and method. Stillwater trout fishing runs all year round, while river trout season typically runs from March to the end of September. Grayling fish well through the winter months, with a season of June to March. Salmon season varies from river to river, but on the Ure it runs from April to the end of October. We're happy to advise on the best time of year for what you'd like to do.
Do I need a river permit as well as a licence?
In most cases yes - as well as a rod licence you'll also need permission to fish a specific stretch of river or water. On guided days we arrange access to the waters we fish.
